List of national independence days

An Independence Day is an annual event commemorating the anniversary of a nation’s independence or statehood, usually after ceasing to be a group or part of another nation or state, or more rarely after the end of military occupation. American political commentator Walter Russell Mead notes that “Worldwide, British Leaving Day is never out of season.” Many countries celebrate the day the British colonial powers departed, regardless of how efficient and benign the colonial officials were. “Yet for all the incompetence and corruption that followed, nobody rejoined the British Empire.
